BoxingBC Membership Filtering System
Building a custom WordPress plugin for age-based membership routing
In September 2024, I was given the opportunity to contribute to the BoxingBC.ca website by developing a membership filtering system—a front-end tool designed to guide users to the appropriate membership option based on their age and account status. This was my first professional web development project, and I'm grateful to Taylor Fulde for the opportunity and for placing his trust in me to deliver. It taught me valuable lessons about building practical solutions for real user problems.
The Problem
Users visiting BoxingBC.ca were overwhelmed by too many membership options during registration. With multiple age groups, skill levels, and program types, it was unclear which membership each user should choose. This confusion led to incorrect registrations and support inquiries that could have been prevented with better user guidance.
The Solution
I built a custom WordPress plugin that acts as a 'membership wall'—a filtering interface that collects user information and intelligently routes them to the right membership page. The system validates user input, applies season-specific age logic, and redirects users to a curated view showing only the memberships relevant to their situation, alongside the all-ages 'Recreation' option.
